To improve the quality of teaching and scholarship in the field of philosophy, to catalyze new courses, and to focus the attention of the profession on selected topics, by means of 3 summer training institutes for faculty, a visiting philosopher program and essay competitions. The participants in the various council programs will include many eminent scholars in the field and also teaching faculty in perhaps 200 philosophy departments throughout the country.
