New Directions in Print Culture Studies (Book)Title: New Directions in Print Culture Studies
Author: Jesse Schwartz
Editor: Daniel Worden
Abstract: New Directions in Print Culture Studies features new methods and approaches to cultural and literary history that draw on periodicals, print culture, and material culture, thus revising and rewriting what we think we know about the aesthetic, cultural, and social history of transnational America.
The unifying questions posed and answered in this book are methodological: How can we make material, archival objects meaningful? How can we engage and contest dominant conceptions of aesthetic, historical, and literary periods? How can we present archival material in ways that make it accessible to other scholars and students? What theoretical commitments does a focus on material objects entail?

Circulating American Magazines (Web Resource)Title: Circulating American Magazines
Author: Brooks E. Hefner and Edward Timke
Abstract: Circulation has always been a problem for anyone interested in periodicals. Data have remained difficult to obtain and verify. Scholars, for example, often depend on unreliable and anecdotal circulation numbers cited in letters or memoirs.
The Circulating American Magazines Project addresses the critical absence of reliable circulation information by digitizing data publishers submitted to the Audit Bureau of Circulations (A.B.C.), building a robust database of circulation data covering the period 1919 to 1972. This data was extracted from the A.B.C. Blue Book, Periodical Publisher’s Statements, copies of which are held at a handful of research institutions and the archive of the Alliance of Audited Media.

Author: Mark Noonan
Abstract: This site is a digital companion and archive for the two summer institutes Professor Noonan directed in 2015 and 2020, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).
At the 2015 institute, faculty fellows participated in discussions led by experts in American periodicals; visited sites important to the rise of New York’s periodical press; attended Digital Humanities workshops; and read scholarship on periodical history and pedagogy. Because of the pandemic, the 2020 institute was held fully online. While we were unable to access the archives and streets of New York in person, participants considered issues related to space and place, social justice, and press freedom with renewed urgency.
The site features taped lectures, virtual walking tours, reading lists, and additional resources developed at the institute, aimed at fostering continued discussion and inquiry.
