A three-week institute for college and university teachers on the Civil Rights movement in Mississippi and its relation to national developments.

The proposed institute will expose participants to the history and landmarks of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi. By examining the contradictions and intersections between the national narrative of the Civil Rights Movement with a more community-based local Movement narrative illustrated by Mississippi, participants will have a more full understanding of how such factors as struggle, institution building, and power influence social change in America. The institute will include presentations by scholars, exploration of primary source materials, music, oral history panels featuring a variety of civil rights history-makers, and field trips to historical sites throughout Mississippi. This Summer Institute for College and University Teachers will particularly target community college faculty.
