City of Print: New York and the Periodical Press

FAIN: EH-50437-14

CUNY Research Foundation, NYC College of Technology (Brooklyn, NY 11201-1909)
Mark James Noonan (Project Director: March 2014 to May 2016)

A two-week summer institute for twenty-five college and university teachers on the evolution of New York's periodical press.

Across eras, New York disseminated news and produced content in its plethora of publications, ranging from newspapers, monthly reviews, and annuals to niche magazines covering political, social, or aesthetic matters. Collectively, these periodicals constructed the rich cultural tapestry of the city for millions of readers. Dominating the production of reading material for both elite and mass audiences, NY editors and writers shaped national discussions on culture and politics. City of Print:New York and the Periodical Press will call attention to and examine this important archive, yet to be explored as a collective whole. Participants will come to better understand the evolution of New York's periodical press, the shaping of readership and genres, and the significance of place and literary spaces in the production of periodical literature. In contextualizing the physicality of the page within the physicality of space, participants will encounter new approaches to periodical studies.
