Giving Voice to A Shared Past: Two Schools and Their Communities in Local History

A five-week summer institute for teachers at two local high schools, followed by academic year workshops and research projects, on the history of two African-American communities in Jackson, Mississippi.

The project will lead to the creation of a database. The data will serve to chronicle the dhared historical past of two African American southern inter city communities and their oldest public high schools with Lanier and Jim Hill. Teachers at W.H. Lanier and Jim Hill High Schools will participate in a five week humanities based and scholars led summer institute. Post-institute follow-up sessions will insure for implementation of curriculum innovation and integration using local history humanities content. Technology, both informational and digital and functioning websites will be enlisted to promote and feature humanities content. An additional dimension of the project will include local history exhibits at community sites -- i.e. churches, libraries, and community centers -- and other sponsored programs.
