Planning for a graduate-level program in Afro-American Studies. ABSTRACT: Planning for a graduate-level program in Afro-American Studies. Faculty-student committee to study existing programs, recruit students, and plan courses during summer 1970. Fall 1970 seminar for perspective faculty and for selected prospective graduate students and a few undergraduates. Guest lecturer/consultants invited to provide substantial knowledge and evaluations of substantive and procedural aspects of program. Seminar members develop new and original materials for use at graduate level and examine works in use at elementary, secondary and undergraduate levels. Actual courses in Afro-American Studies at graduate level to be introduced in spring and summer 1971 (not funded under this grant). Emergence and popularity of Black Studies programs have seen concentration of effort at undergraduate level; graduate level programs have been neglected in favor of summer institutes for secondary and undergraduate teachers, to fill lacks in previous training. Graduate programs will enable elementary and secondary teachers to earn MA or teacher's certification in Afro-American Studies. Beneficial "spill-over" effect on undergraduate offerings; will strengthen available resource and research material and train individuals who eventually might be assigned responsibility for undergraduate teaching. Funds for staff, supplies, travel, resource materials and indirect costs.
