Macalester College will implement a plan for a cluster of Freshman Seminars (5-7 to be continued yearly) designed (l) to train students to "read " in the humanities, i.e., to interpret and assess a poem, a painting, a building, a symphony, a philosophical treatise or any artifact of human creation; (2) to acquaint students with the claims made and questions raised by the humanities; and, (3) to make them aware of the nature and range of humanistic courses in the Macalester curriculum.
