To create a new interdisciplinary humanities core course which will be designed to appeal to the students enrolled at Clemson University and at the same time could be used as a training course for the faculty. The core course, "Myths of Progress in Science and the Arts", will begin with a study of contemporary regional problems of progress in a newly emerging industrial state, and expand to an historical exploration of the idea of progress as it is found in literature, painting, sculpture, and music.
