Washington University, to de\elop an integrated undergraduate major in literary and historical studies that offers methods seminars, supervised tutorials and senior year independent studies. NEH funding allows released time for members of the English and History departments to participate in the new seminars, provides summer stipends for the preparation of new seminars, allows for the evaluation of the new program, provides fees for visiting distinguished lecturers and the appointment of a research assistant bibliographer. The Literature and History major is a pilot program for a Center of Comparative Studies in the Humanities sponsored by the university.
