Luther College (Decorah, IA 52101-1041)
Norma J. Hervey (Project Director: March 2007 to August 2009)

A five-week summer institute for thirty high school teachers on the complex history and continuing relevance of the Holocaust, to be held in Washington, D.C., Berlin, Prague, Karkow, and other locations.

The goals of this Institute will be to grasp the complex history that made the Holocaust possible and the ongoing impact of the tragedy. Our objective is to provide direct learning experience at sites that differ from each other with staff whose work is to support teaching and research that will contribute to the education of teachers, communities, and pupils. The anticipated outcome is a network to mentor high school teachers in order to develop vital programs to address contemporary and future issues. Participants will experience and work with exhibits, collections and archives and share the experiences of a remakable literature and the scholars who create it. The Institute offers life and professional enhancement to participants and to a wider circle of teachers and pupils, spreading challenges and seeking answers to the most significant human dilemmas.
