A five-week summer institute for twenty-five school teachers on the history and culture of South Africa to take place in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg and Durban.

A five-week Summer Institute for school teachers to be conducted in South Africa. The institute will feature a rigorous academic program of lectures at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth and in Cape Town from the University of the Western Cape. The objective will be for the NEH Summer Scholars to acquire a sound knowledge of the major themes and their interpretations in the history and culture of South Africa. Integrated into the academic study will be extensive field study to places of historical and cultural interest which illustrate and clarify the academic study. As most American teachers are not academically prepared to teach about Africa, this institute in South Africa will enable the twenty-five NEH Summer Scholars to gain cognitive and affective knowledge of South Africa and its people. They will develop curriculum materials to use in their classrooms and to disseminate widely to other teachers, thus promoting the teaching of the humanities.
