A three-week summer institute for thirty school teachers on Cherokee history and culture in North Carolina.

The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) will conduct a three-week Summer Institute for 30 School Teachers titled, “Beyond the Trail of Tears: A View from the Cherokee Homeland.” Thirty schoolteachers from throughout the United States will be selected to participate in the Institute, which will be held on the NCCAT campus in Cullowhee, NC from June 22 to July 12, 2014. The story of the forced removal of thousands of American Indians from their homes in the East to land west of the Mississippi River is included in the history curriculum for K-12 students across the United States. This relocation, often referred to as the Trail of Tears, is a complex and difficult story on numerous levels. Viewed through the history of the Cherokee experience, this Institute will provide teachers with an in-depth study of the topic that will enhance their own instruction and aid them in the development of materials that can be used by teachers throughout the country.
