A faculty humanities workshop for twenty-five school teachers on visions of slavery and freedom in the writings of Lydia Maria Child, Frederick Douglass, Herman Melville, and Harriet Jacobs.

This project will offer a series of interdisciplinary presentations, workshops and field trips to twenty-five teachers of History, Social Studies, American Literature and English Language Arts frm public, parochial and charter schools in southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and Nantucket. We will meet once a month from January to May 2006 and again for an intensive four-day session in June 2006 to study the roles these four antebellum authors played in the "evolution of the concepts of personal freedom, individual responsibility and respect for human dignity" as described in the Massachusetts History and Social Science Curriculum Frameworks.
