Maryemma Graham (Project Director: April 2010 to May 2011)

The applicant requests an Emergency Grant of $24,650 to support the participation of sixteen U.S. teachers in a day-long workshop, "Language Matters IV: Reading and Teaching Morrison in Translation", that will be part of the Sixth Biennial Conference of the Toni Morrison Society (TMS), scheduled for Paris, France, November 4-7, 2010. The grant will also support services and supplies for the workshop.

"Language Matters IV: Reading and Teaching Morrison in Translation," is a day-long workshop that will be held on Saturday, November 6, as an extension of the Sixth Biennial TMS conference. It will bring together both literature and French language teachers in the US and Paris to consider the problems and prospects of teaching Morrison in different languages. Our focus will be on translation as a process and a means of communication, and we want to look specifically at the teaching of literature and culture through the translated text. Morrison's work will serve as an example and create a model for professional development work in cultural exchange and translation.
