To establish a method for systematic recording of data on the arts and crafts of sub-Saharan Africa, which will include census/inventory of types, materials, techniques and uses of art and craft forms. Also data on specialist/artist and historical settings. Eight months support (one in London, seven in Nigeria) to establish a method for systematic recording of data on the arts and crafts of sub-Saharan Africa. Rapid loss of traditions establishing an urgent need for a scheme of recording through census/inventory the types, materials, techniques and uses of art and craft forms. Data on specialist/artist and on the historical setting will be studied also, not included in most earlier studies. Data thus obtained would be useful in analysis and comparative study of traditional arts and crafts.
