Study of Russian ethical and social theory from the 18th century through the Soviet period, with some attention to the philosophies of man, history and religion. Study exhibits both continuities and discontinuities between Soviet Marxist-Leninists and earlier Russian thinkers. Ethical and social theory have played and important role in the history of Russian philosophy. Earlier developments shed light on later--especially Soviet--devlopments.
