A study of the whole range of sound film to arrive at an aesthetics of narrative sound film. No theory yet exists for the film arts, thus study will provide some basis on which to judge contemporary films. ABSTRACT: An aesthetics of the narrative sound film, arrived at through studies of major directors. Film criticism lags behind criticism of other arts largely because of its lack of theory. Best reviewers working under magazine conditions which necessarily make their analyses piecemeal. No study of whole range of sound film art has appeared in English. Film is rapidly becoming preferred art of both public and students; this study will provide some basis on which to judge contemporary films.
