Comparative study of Italian city-states from 1200 to 1550, a period during which the city-state provided an environment for remarkable cultural achievment and brought forth highly sophisticated political processes and public institutions. During past generations, scholars have producecd a number of specialized studies on individual city-states but no synthesis using comparative methods of analysis. Modes of analysis and generalizations needed which encompass the political and social nature of the whole class of city-states.
