To provide for research to complete the grantee's five volume History of Modern Criticism 1750-1950. The first four volumes, published by Yale University Press, cover the period to 1900 and the fifth volume, an examination of the main critics in all the chief literatures of the West, would be the first comprehensive account of literary criticsim in the 20th Century.
