To provide for a study of the river in 19th century life and literature in America. The study will seek to demonstrate the reciprocal relationship between works of art and major social trends, investigating the tendency of contemporary issues to irradiate and inform the prevailing cultural artifacts. The river is recognized as a dominant commercial fact and cultural symbol in the last century.
