To study the changing ideas of community which inform English fiction and affect both the structure and style of novels. Attention would focus on Dafoe, Fielding and Smollett in the 18th century; Austen, Dickens, Hardy and George Eliot in the 19th century; Joyce and Lawerenc in the 20th century.
