To make a book-length study of Emerson's figure of "the Scholar." While the scholar is of fundamental importance to Emersonian literature, being present in his journals, lectures, and essays of the 1830s and after, it has not received the comparable attention his other ideas have. The issues at state for Emerson are still live issues for the modern American scholar, and to increase present-day understanding of Emerson's responses to these issues is to further our own self-knowledge.
