The case of Geneva has special importance for women's history because it was the first place where women of all social classes practiced birth control before 1700, and it was one of the few places where divorce was permitted fairly equitably to both sexes. To investigate the lives of women in Geneva from 1550-1800. To advance humanistic knowledge in a largely unknown terrain, namely the history of half of humanity before the apparent changes of the French and Industrial revolutions.
