The proposed study is a description and an analysis of the development of a group of activists known as the shishi ("men of spirit," loyalists) whose activities in the years between, approximately, 1860-68 were a major element inbringing about the Meiji Resotration of 1868, the focal point of Japan's transformation into a modern state.
