The Painting of Rogier van der Weyden

FAIN: FA-10832-74

The proposed study concerns the art of Rogier van der Weyden, a major Northern Renaissance painter. The two most important monographs on his work (J. Destree, 1930 and H. Beenken, 1951) are concerned primarily with problems of style and attribution and discuss only briefly the total content of each work. The proposed monograph would examine each work of art as a totality: a summation of the religious doctrine of the time, the artist's invention, and, whenever possible to determine, the patron's influence.
