To write a multiple family biography of the four famous sons of David Dudley Field (1781-1867), a Congregational clergyman of Stockbridge, Mass., and his wife Submit Dickenson Field. Their sons achieved distinction in law, business, technology and letters, in ways that were highly representative of the main currents of 19th c. thought and action.
