To examine the problem of the scramble for Africa concentrating upon the role of "public opinion" during the era of partition and early colonial rule. To consider the extent to which imperialism in Africa contributed to the orgins of the First World War, and how imperial statesmen envisaged the future of Africa during the early years of colonial sway.
