To write a complete history of American drama, consisting of five volumes: Beginnings to 1828; 1828 to 1889; 1890 to 1919; 1920 to 1945; and 1945 to the present, concentrating on the first two volumes of this history. The drama in America is best studied against the social, political, philosophical, literary, and general historical movements of America's past. The proposed study provides a necessary evaluation of dramatic art in America and contributes to a better understanding of America's literary and theatrical heritage.
