The Aristocracy of Medieval Champagne

FAIN: FA-10994-75

Theodore Evergates
McDaniel College (Westminster, MD 21157-4390)

To investigate family and social organization and evolution in medieval Europe, specifically in France in the 12th and 13th Gentries, by focusing on the aristocracy of 13th century Champagne. The inventory by the count of Champagne in 1249-1252 with information on over 2700 persons and 3500 individual properties, is the most complete dossier available on an entire medieval aristocracy. An analysis of this inventory will furnish the first "real" model of a 13th C. aristocracy.
