FAIN: FA-11092-75

Ira N. Klein
American University (Washington, DC 20016-8200)

To examine the causes of long term population changes and variations in rates of mortality in South Asia. The study will examine the development of South Asian economy from the.. .mid-19th-century to about 1939, which will contribute to an understanding of the economic impact of foreign rule and to the issue of whether foreign dominion furthered or slowed industrialization. The main focus, however, will be to show the impact of modernization and accompanying environmental change, as well as the effects of public health policies and other factors, on epidemics, death rates and population.
