To study opera as a characteristic theatrical form and a major cultural phenomenon from the late 18th through the early 20th century. Compared to other art forms, opera has not received serious treatment. The study will: 1) relate opera to literary romanticism; 2) demonstrate how opera provides a form for enactment of key myths; 3) define opera as a mode of drama; and 4) trace the impact of opera on literature .
