FAIN: FA-11154-75

Harold S. Powers
Princeton University (Princeton, NJ 08540-5228)

To investigate the historical development and theoretical applications of concepts called "mode" in Western musical thought, from the appearance of the term in late classical/early medieval times to the present. Particular attention will be given to 1) mode and allied terms in medieval sources; and 2) the introduction of "mode" as a basic term for phenomena in other repertories, including non- Western.
