To study these Frenchmen born between 1792 and 1802 who constituted a "generation" with a significant age-related identity. The identity was expressed in a youth ideology, collective opposition to the Bourbon monarchy, and various philosophic, literary and political doctrines thought to be appropriate to the heirs of the revolutionary era. The study will not only consider major currents of 19th century intellectual history but will examine questions of historical sociology in the light of demographic and occupational data.
