To examine the development of black leadership in Jamaica during the period between the abolition of slavery in 1834 and the end of colony self-government in 1865. The study will more fully identify the black leaders during this period, the process of leadership recruitment, the relation of these leaders to the slave regime, and their occupations and socio-economic status after slavery.
