To study Dante and other major 14th c. poets, principally, Petrarch and Boccaccio, in an attempt at a reevaluation of the sources of Renaissance poetics. The study focuses upon the response of 14th c. poets and men of letters in Italy to Dominican attacks on poetry and treats Dante's use of "the allegory of the theologians." The unique aspect of this study is the approach: historical as well as literary and the inclusion of other 14th c. poets, outside, of Dante
