To study a relatively neglected period in the life of Thomas Hardy. There has been no full-scale investigation of the evidence relevant to the ways Hardy, during his last two decades, was rethinking his relationship to the past and to the modern world. The project will examine Hardy's religious views; his poems about history which have universal considerations on the meaning of life and time; his poems about love; and his concept of the craft of poetry.
