The Invasion Within: The Contest of Cultures in Colonial North America

FAIN: FA-11198-75

James L. Axtell
College of William and Mary (Williamsburg, VA 23186-0002)

To explain the history of colonial America in terms of intercultural contact and acculturation. To view it less as a minor military theatre for European wars than as an educational struggle for the loyalty of opposing cultures, and therefore as a moral contest between competing cultural styles. To explain and relate the success of Indians in converting the English and French to their way of life, and the failure of the Indians to become European.
