Slavery and Tidewater Plantation Culture in Antebellum Georgia

To study slavery and plantation culture in the coastal and island areas of Georgia. The project will center upon tidewater plantation society as a cultural institution and as a political structure in which authority was used to produce commercial staples. The project will examine management and treatment of slaves, slave hiring, slave trading, racial attitudes, and the factorage system. The study will also deal with the folk culture of the Afro-American.
