To study growth and development of a major research enterprise at the California Institute of Technology during the 1920's. The historical significance of this project is two-fold. First, historians are beginning to grapple with the problems surrounding scientific change and its relationship to social needs. Secondly, the transition in the conduct of scientific research is now attracting the attention of both historians and students of science policy. The project is concerned with new ways of conducting scientific research during the 1920's, and its effects on the physical science disciplines and upon science-society relationships.
