To write a critical biography of the composer Elliott Carter. While about a quarter of the book will deal with his life, the bulk of the study is devoted to his works themselves, to their roots, literary as well as musical, and to their influence on American music of the last couple of decades. Carter is judged by most in the profession the leading figure in musical composition in the U.S. today. So far, there is no full-scale study of Carter.
