To study the changing relationship between secular music and vernacular poetry in France during the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. To be considered are the works of Machaut; the chansons of Dyfay and Binchois; Josquin des Prez’s settings of the Rhetoriqueurs and of popular songs; settings of Marot's poetry; and the musical repertory surrounding the Pleiade poets.
