A Study of Shakespearean Comedy

FAIN: FA-11352-76

Robert Ornstein
Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH 44106-1712)

Grantee is writing a book on Shakespearean comedy which is, in part, a study of its evolution as well as an exploration of the crucial aspects of Shakespeare's comic art, for example, the ways that Shakespeare uses Romantic artifices and contrivances of plot and yet makes a dramatic fable credible. Grantee will also be concerned with the role of psychological portraiture (or lack of it) in characterizations in the comedies, in the treatment of love and marriage, and the problems of aesthetic form and emotional resolution which the comedies seem to present more frequently than do the tragedies and history plays.
