A Reevaluation of the Honor Question in the Theatre of Calderon

FAIN: FA-11354-76

Donald L. McGrady
University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA 22903-4833)

Grantee will re-evaluate the conjugal honor code in the theatre of Pedro Calderon. Recent criticisms has held that Calderon took a negative view of this cultural phenomenon in his theatre. Grantee's study will attempt to illustrate that though Calderon felt the honor code to be pathetic in consequence that in fact the playwright does not question it. The study will thus reverse much of the thought and criticism, especially British, about Calderon and Renaissance literature and society.
