To examine and survey music of the court of Francois I of Valois, King of France treating specifically the royal patronage extended to musicians and composers of that time. Grantee plans to survey the music under Charles VIII and Louis XII, the music of the Chapel of Francois I, the music of the Chamber, that at Court Festivals and Progressions, compositions written for the Court, the marriage of music and poetry, music manuscripts emanating from the Court, and performance practices at the Court. The completed monograph "Musical Patronage at the Court of Francis I" will, the Grantee feels, present the fullest treatment to date of the place of music at the court that was then the center of the Renaissance in France.
