The Containment Doctine in History

FAIN: FA-11490-76

Thomas G. Paterson
University of Connecticut (Storrs, CT 06269-9000)

To examine the containment doctrine in American foreign policy from an historical perspective in a book length study, The Containment Doctrine In History, with an emphasis on the year of its formulation, 1945-1950. The study will utilize recently opened historical documents (British records, official American sources, and private manuscripts collections for example.) The containment doctrine has been the commanding principle of American foreign policy since the end of the last war and has been, since its launching, the center of persistent national debate on the goals and means of American diplomacy.
