The study of the social history of working women in the U.S. from 1820 to 1970, describing and evaluating changes in women's work roles. The study will ask how these changes affect male workers and will explore the relationship between work for women and changing ideas about family. Grantee will ask how women of different classes and ethnic groups perceive their social roles and their work experiences. The book will examine what functions women have served in the labor market as a whole
