To write an interpretive history of women and the family in the United States since the Revolution. It is probably the first attempt to integrate the history of the family with the history of women, thus providing a full history of women's activities and experiences in the past. The emphasis will be on interpretation, drawing broad conclusions as to the direction and shifts in the roles and activities of women and the family over two or more centuries. Comparisons with other societies will also be made in an effort to put the American experience into a broader context.
