To study the reciprocal relationships between the professional historian and the federal government since the founding of the American Historical Association. The study will deal with the historical activities of the federal government and day-to-day operations that affect historians. The project will discuss the ways in which scholars have participated in federal programs or served as critics and watchdogs of such projects.
