Study will investigate the emergence of an urban bourgeois culture in the city of Bordeaux between 1763 and 1830, dealing particularly with the elaboration of a liberal world view in all its aspects: political, legal, social and intellectual, and will assess the place of Bordeaux in the larger French and Atlantic contexts. Study will emphasize the origins and formulation of a bourgeois mentalite in the broadest sense. Primary concern is to trace the relationship between the most sophisticated thought of the enlightenment and the actual values and practices of the urban elite.
