Strategies of Group Advancement Utilized by Japanese-Americans in Hawaii

To examine the relationship between the strategy for group advancement selected by an immigrant, (individual mobility, racial/ethnics politics, class politics) and the groups ultimate social position in American society. Grantee will also attempt to ascertain those conditions which stimulated the development of inter-group strain and hostility among Japanese-Americans in Hawaii. The experiences of other minorities in Hawaii will be examined and compared to those of the Japanese-Americans. Japanese-Americans in Hawaii have moved from an initial position as contract laborers to political, educational, and occupational prominence
